Holistic Animal Medicine

Question:
I have a male cat, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years old, intact, who testedpositive for feline leukemia. He was fine for about two years, but justthree days ago he became very lethargic and has a decreased appetite. He has also lost some weight - about a pound. I took him to the vetyesterday and they gave him some nutritional fluids under the skin andsome antibiotics. They also gave us some extra-nutritious canned foodto give him, and told us to give him .8mg of this antibiotic twice aday. He seems a little more alert today, and even ate a small amount ofthe canned food himself - but otherwise he doesn't walk around or movearound unless it's to go to the bathroom. He also doesn't want to drinkmuch, so I give him water with a syringe. I don't believe that the antibiotics will help him very much and I'minterested in trying to find some holistic treatments that will boosthis immune system. Does anyone have any treatments that have worked fortheir FeLV positive cats? I would really appreciate some help in thismatter, as I've heard that some holistic treatments have worked well.

Answer: Its wonderful that you are wise enough to realize that holistic treatmentsare the way to go. FeLV and FIV cats shouldnever be vaccinated because the vaccines destroy their immune systems. Also, they should be fed raw food diets, enzymes, vitamins and vegetables (organic is preferable). Yes, a FeLVkitty can become negative and it is not thatdifficult. It only requires some effort on your part and if you love yourkitty like I love mine (my boy originally tested FIV+but has become healthier as I continue the protocol I previouslymentioned.).

The following are excellent materials which will guide you on your questfor a healthy kitty.Diane Stein - The Natural Remedy Book for Dogs and Cats;Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard Pitcain;Natural Cat Care: A Complete Guide to Holistic Health Care for Cats- CelesteYarnall; The Very Healthy Cat Book by Weldell Belfield.

Your kitty needs enzymes to help him absorb the nutrients he is eating.Prozyme is highly recommended. If you don't seeit in a pet store call 800 522-5537 for a trial size. It works. Also,Noah's Kingdom (732)-291-9100 sells a premixedorganic food supplement package and also a supplement to aid your kitty'simmune system. My FIV kitty and my olderkitty take both and they seem to have more energy. An additional benefit ofthe holistic approach is that the litter boxhardly has any odor now!
