Question: My standard schnauzer, Zoe, is a volunteer at a local childrens'hospital. A few months ago she came down with a raging case ofGiardia. She's been through several drug treatments (Flagyl and someother drug) to no avail, she's still got Giardia. If I can't get hercured, I'm going to have to pull her from her volunteer job. Doesanyone know of any holistic approaches to ridding dogs of this parasite? I have the following advice from a human who rid herself of Giardiaholistically, but I need help translating this information intosomething appropriate for a 42 lb schnauzer.1. Take generous amounts of garlic - this woman ate actual clovesseveral times a day.2. Herbal preparation from Nature's Way called PARA X, has most of theherbs recommended to get rid of a parasitic invasion.3. Fast for 3 days, consuming only apple products (doesn't seem toosound for a dog).4. Consume acidopholis &/or yogurt (I've never given my dog this stuffbut somehow I don't think she'll eat it)5. Mix 1 tbs of diatamicious earth in water & drink every morning.6. Drink aloe vera juice everyday.7. Clean up the diet - fresh veggies, no sugar or refined carbos, cutout red meat. I think I can come up with a (canine palatable) concoction that wouldcombine the last 4 items, but it would have to include ground beef tohide the flavors of the other stuff. Would the inclusion of meat ruinthe effects of the other stuff? Any ideas on dosages of garlic and PARA X?
Answer: The problem is not with the drug treatment. Holistic medicine won'thelp you unless you solve the basic problem.. you have a contaminatedwater source that your dog is drinking out of. It sounds to me as ifyour dog is getting continually re-infected. Look around at whatwater supplies your dog is getting into, and insure that the dog is*only* drinking clean water.
